Kitchen unit almost for free or…

...how to make something new from something old…a.k.a. KICN

It is hard to imagine in today's day and age of hyper-consumerism full of commercials for loans and credit cards for which we haven’t got the money, adverts for new appliances and cars, which we don’t actually need, that it is possible to acquire things without spending thousands of bucks.

I’m trying to comprehend people who are buying luxurious things they don’t have the money for, so they can feel good about themselves. Getting a mortgage is admittedly common, but who belongs to the lucky few who get something for free from their parents, girlfriends, boyfriends, husbands, wives, bosses, lovers…

We forget to spend money on experiences and instead, we are buying things thinking that they will make us happy. They might do, but how long for?

We buy things to show that we can afford them and that we will look different from others but at the same time, these are the same things everyone else’s got. The same TV sets, sofas, kitchen units…in an effort to spend our hard earned cash and be different, we are ending up being like everyone else.

We don’t hesitate to spend lots of money on products we think look good and will show nicely in front of those who visit us once ‘once a year’ so they can evaluate whether they are better off, have a better car…have more stuff. We are getting rid of all the old things just to replace them with something new, but a lot of the times of lower quality and often boring.

We forget to do the things we enjoy doing. We don’t go on a holidays as much because we have just spent our last paycheck on a brand new white leather sofa that is as practical as white converse trainers on a rainy November day.

In this blog I’d like to show you how old furniture can be converted into something visually pleasing, original and last but not least into something that will cost next to nothing.

My kitchen is a little different. That’s what I say to my visitors once a year :). It’s converted from my grandma’s and grandpa’s old living room unit, the same one that everyone knows from their parents’ or grandparents’ living rooms.

So you know what I’m talking about, here are some pictures…

My grandad with his 70th birthday cake. The living room unit is in the background.

Same house, different room, the kitchen unit is fitted differently. It was redesigned and fitted by my wonderful dad. The first step was indeed a technical drawing, which was then executed as seen in the pictures.

Another view. According to my dad it looks ideal…but I never really listen to him entirely…

Right after the paint job was done, my dad complains: ‘WTF?! Why have you painted over that beautiful wooden finish, such a shame, you always mess it up like that!’

Two days later he fell in love with it too, appreciating my own of style.

The stove, table and chairs are from the original kitchen. The kitchen bench and carpet are new. The ‘KICN’ print and recipe for ‘Svieckova’ on the wall add to the new style of the space.

My grandparents didn’t have the usual kitchen unit sink so we had to work around it. It’s not ideal but it works.

Svieckova’ can’t be left out.

And so can’t the ‘cake’.
